Tim’s collaboration with Flying Lotus began when Warp Records asked Tim to create the artwork for the album “Los Angeles”. While discussing ideas for the sleeve art, Flying Lotus described the album as the soundtrack to a non-existent science fiction film. With this as a starting point, Tim brought in his frequent collaborators Build (design and art direction) and Commonwealth (sculpture design) and together they created an “artifact” which Tim photographed over a period of several months. Once the team had completed the album artwork, they took the thousands of images Tim had shot, sequenced them and brought them to flame artist Mark Szumski of Haunt, New York. Inspired by the non-narrative work of Stan Brakhage, they juggled the piece back and forth with multiple shoots, building layer upon layer and editing it to audio by Lotus. The initial concept was to create a “trailer” for an imaginary psychedelic horror film. Entitled "Soft Gun Lilly", it is the first part of a multi-part fable that will incorporate intricate character design, symbolic imagery and abstract sequences into a complete story. |
