Niall Downing grew up on a farm. After school he went to France to learn the lingo and be a surfer but his heart belongs to directing. He studied Fine Art and English at college, then worked his way up the production ladder via Channel 4’s Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush and TFI Friday, then at the BBC’s Music and Arts dept and Talkback Productions.

At Talkback he co-wrote and directed a number of successful pilot shows. One of which he co-developed, wrote, shot and edited. It became Channel 4’s Grand Designs. It was Niall’s first long form documentary work and it was nominated for a Bafta.

Numerous factual and documentary projects followed, including Don’t Look Down, an ambitious architectural series climbing some of the tallest structures in Britain, and Jamie Oliver’s first TV series, The Naked Chef.

Niall moved into comedy following straight-laced British TV star Daisy Donovan as she became a pimp in LA. The week it aired the resulting programme came second in the ratings only to Big Brother. He has since collaborated with Ant Hines, writer/producer of Da Ali G Show and Borat the Movie on a comedy documentary series, The Papdits. He also directed a season of films following Ricky Gervais meeting his comedy heroes.

Niall continues to work in TV but now also directs commercials and has directed campaigns for clients including Sainsbury’s, Hovis, Sky, Anorexia Awareness, Toyota, the BBC’s Comic Relief and Children in Need,. His work has been awarded by D&AD, BTAA, the APA 50 and the Creative Circle, among others.

He signed to Partizan in 2009.
